The difference between the before and after pictures is hard to believe, but it is quite real! Big Woods Remodeling provided this remarkable transformation, including a remodeling of the kitchen, to a house in Chapel Hill, NC during the summer of 2014.
The screened porch was a rarely used outdoor space just off the kitchen area, and the owners wanted to make it part of their home by turning it into a sun room/family room.
The existing windows and exterior door were removed and reinstalled into the newly built exterior walls. The brick was carefully removed, cleaned and used in the new exterior as well.
A direct vent gas log fireplace was added with thin veneer ledgestone masonry, and the flat screen TV is mounted on the stone above the fireplace. Also, the porch ceiling was rebuilt to incorporate an octagonal tray ceiling with a concealed rope light hidden within the crown molding detail.
Round, Tuscan-style structural columns were added to support the new beams and existing roof above. Existing tile floor in kitchen and screened porch was replaced with Red Oak hardwood flooring throughout to match existing floors in the house.
Some of the existing cabinets were modified, including the addition of an ice-maker in the island. Then, a new Granite counter top was installed on the island, wallpaper and old tile backsplash were removed, and a new marble backsplash (with mosaic over cooktop) was added to complete the transformation.
Many thanks to Home Front Interiors of Chapel Hill for design consultation, also to Accent Hardwood Flooring, Stonehenge Masonry for their contributions to this successful project.
